At first, I hated this pick as another G, and an OT to guard conversion at that.
But since he played G in college as well, I have less fears about the conversion. And took snaps at C at the Senior Bowl. And we did get plus value here.
And if I am being honest, we did need lots of help on the IOL. Our starters (Cappa & Volson) were backup level, and our backups (Kirkland & Stueber) were PS level. And Fird is mediocre and better at OT.
My main gripe with the Rivers pick is that it seemingly shuts the door on getting a more starter ready G in FA (Scherff, Hernandez, Risner). I do not think Fairchild is quite plug & play ready, and Patrick is a moderate (at best) level starter.
We usually keep 10, but with all this versatility, 9 is possible.
Starting Locks: OBJ (LT), Mims (RT), Karras ©.
Roster locks, competing for starting spot: Patrick (LG/RG), Fairchild (LG), Ford (OT3/G), Rivers (LG/LT).
That is 7. What is left?
#8. Volson, LG. Could start, could get cut to save cap.
#9. C2: Lee or McLaughlin.
#10 (or #9 if Volson gone): Cochran (OT), Etienne (OT), Stueber (G), Kirkland (OG/OT).
Still, not being Hernandez, Scherff, or Risner is not Rivers' fault. Upon reflection and some distance, it might be my favorite pick. Best value for sure, if no immediate help.
