From the Bengals perspective, data indicates that pass rushers tend to fall off rapidly after they pass the age of 30. They don't want to give him a new contract and get caught in a decline.
From Trey's perspective, he is trying to maximize his earnings.
It's all business at the end of the day.
Correct, I can understand both sides of the coin here. Although I do have to side with the Bengals FO b/c Trey is no spring chicken at 31. Katie Blackburn offered him a big pay raise to the tune of $28 million a year, and he'd be crazy not to take it. At his age, if he sits out a year, rest equals rust, and I don't see any other team offering him a multi-year contract for over $28 million. Maybe the FO can offer him a production bonus, like if he's in the top 3 of NFL sack leaders, then Trey gets a $5 million bonus paid immediately at the end of the regular season.
Where's Kevin O'Leary and Mark Cuban when we need them? Yes, I'm a Shark Tank nerd!
