We dont know all the details but we do know Trey had only completed 2 seasons of his 4 years contract when he and his agent came back to the Bengals demanding more money after coming off just an 8 sack season. The Bengals gave him a 21 million dollar contract with an 8 million dollar signing bonus and added a year on to his contract which then meant Trey was under contract for the next 3 seasons.
At that point since Trey was going to be under contract to the Bengals for three years, I very seriously doubt the Bengals said "here's a 1 year and we'll take care of you if continue to play well" That makes no sense considering Trey would have 3 years left on his contract. Play well and we will take care of you 4 years from now on your next contract? I think the conversion was more like Trey saying he wants more money than his current contract which still had 2 years left and the Bengals agreeing to give him more money but only if they got an additional year added on to the contract. "You want us to give you more money even though you are only 2 years into you 4 year contract you signed with us? We will give you more money but we want a year added to the contract" Which explanation sounds more plausable?
