In 2022 he had just 8 sacks which put him at #30 overall in sacks and #18 amongst DE's. Coming off a season where he ranked #30 in the NFL in sacks and just 2 years into his contract with the Bengals, he came to the Bengals wanting a new contract and more money. He didnt deserve a raise for his 8 sack season or a new contract especially when he was only half way through his first contract. The Bengals went ahead and took care of Trey and gave him a lot of money Trey didnt deserve at that point in time.
Like you said earlier Trey didnt bet on himself. I think Trey got scared coming off his 8 sack season and tried to get paid as much as he could at that time. You see it in the interviews he gave after he signed the extension. He was very happy. He should have been happy considering he just had an 8 sack season which ranked Hendrickson down at #30 in the NFL in sacks. Still, Trey and his agent got the Bengals to give him even more money and to overpay for his 8 sack production. Trey follows that season with a 17 sack season that more than doubled his sack total from the previous year, now he realizes he should have waited and bet on himself so he tries to get more money from the Bengals and another contract for the 2nd year in a row. This situation is on Trey and his agent.
That's a lot of words and meaningful stat evasion just to say that you think that he's greedy and has already been overpaid.

In 2022, he had 18 QB hits, 4th most among edge defenders, a 17.03% pressure rate, which was 8th among pass rushers, and 62 pressures, which was top 12 in the NFL. He had a PFF pass rush grade of 90.2 (top 5 in the NFL), and was widely considered one of the 100 best players in the NFL heading into the 2023 season (75th by the NFL players association, 56th by PFF).
By all accounts, he had an elite 2022 season.
Yes, yes he did have a fantastic season in 2022. Why else would the team have been so quick to jump on the extension? Truth is Trey produces much more than just simply "sacks", his QB hits and TFL are also right up there where a player of his caliber should be. People wanting to single out one particular stat item and use is as a reason that he shouldn't be paid are just fooling themselves, as Hendrickson is not just an elite player, he's also a much needed leader on that Bengal defense.
