I agree with you though, him missing time practicing with the team will hurt his progress as a rookie and it has been dumb of him not to sign.
To act like missing this time won't hurt him at all is ignorant IMO.
I think the kid needs to be humbled, I hope someone plants his ass the first couple of times..
