I've always viewed him as more of a chicken shit than as a leader because of that approach and couldn't wait for his carcass to retire.
But maybe you're right. Being passive and taking fastballs down the middle is good baseball when your team is facing a tough left hander and you've got him on the ropes. Too Canadian for my tastes.
