Corners aren't on an island as much as you think. Zone coverage is the primary coverage of every team in the league. They have to coordinate with the linebackers and other DBs to make sure they have the correct check and they have to understand when/where to pass receivers off. There's a lot of little stuff that goes in to that. Leverage, jam techniques, depth etc.
They need a lot of practice. Defensive coverages are fascinating and can become quite complex, especially for things like pattern matching.
