Most NFL players have sore necks from time to time; it's a result of hammering helmets together. If they gave them an X-ray or CT for every soreness they get, they would be overexposing them to radiation. As soon as he developed symptoms, he had a CT (although with an on-site MRI I'm not sure why that would not have been used)
As for the Bengals checking in on him, is he a child? In the real world if you get hurt on your job, the machine keeps moving without you. I'm sure he had contact with trainers, etc., but coaches have all their time focused on the next game. It sucks, but that's just the way it is.
