I don't believe any team in the league would have knelt three times in that circumstance. If they kneel three times and miss the field goal they're in a worse position than they were with the fumble. Can you imagine what people would be saying about a decision like that? Crazy.
No, you need to be able to trust your back to carry the ball three times. If they make a first down the game is over and you don't even have to attempt the field goal.
