Starting your rookie year at 23 shouldn't push yourself outside of the 1st entirely if you're a sure fire 1st round talent. If you're that concerned about losing potentially 1 good year out of the guy's career, you shouldn't be making the decisions.
Say he gets his 2nd contract after his 4th year and like A.J.'s it's extended with his 5th year option, he'll be 27 at the start of that season. A.J. was also 27 at the start of his 5th season.
You plan on your first rounders to be good enough to earn and play through at least 2 contracts, his age won't prohibit that.
