Ward made legal hits that were as devastating as illegal hits, and eventually a rule was made against him. The "burfict rule" is simply enforcing any number of rules that have been on the books for years - ankle twisting, groin punching, the Brady rule etc.

Yes Burfict is a total scum bag and does things that irritate the shit out of me. But as many a Steelers fan has said in defense of some of their more 'passionate' players, the good tends to outweigh the bad.
