His play had already been in decline, which is why he was on the street to begin with.
The remaining time he has performed poorly, in my opinion.
Maybe the key when he first arrived is that he wasn't wearing down in practice.
Regardless, he was by far the worst of the 5 tackles we had on the roster last season, and yet he was the one we brought back of the two FAs.
Smith should have been retained and allow he and Ced to battle it out for the starting spot.
Best man wins, loser is first off of the bench.
I disagree on Winston, his value to play both positions as a BACKUP with experience is important,
After last years draft the writing was on the wall for Smith plus it gave them a year to evaluate the rookies. Our cap is not unlimited, signing Smith would have had resulted in other non signings or extensions plus Smith was hit and miss, he had 3 out of 7 seasons where he played started in just 14 games. Finally things are not off to a great start for Smith in Viking land so i just feel was good move not to resign him, read below
OT Andre Smith — A rocky start in Cincinnati led to Smith working with the backups on Sunday for the first time in five practices. Smith and last year’s starter, T.J. Clemmings, rotated snaps with the starters this week though it’d be a surprise if Smith didn’t start tonight. On a one-year, $3.5 million deal, Smith has another chance to rid doubt from coaches’ minds in his bid to be the right tackle. It comes against a similar Seahawks defensive line that twice gave the Vikings fits last season.
