If the Bengals are planning on trading McCarron in 2015, I'd say they waited too long and also Driskel wouldn't be a very good backup yet. I'd hope this is more of a move with 2016 in mind

I think you meant 2016, with an eye on a 2017 trade.  And I would say that is precisely what is transpiring.
