Some of these lousy top heavy contracts above have to force cuts in other areas. Boling, Pacman, Bernard, Rey all over paid. I can't keep Pacman and Kirkpatrick and Brown Family went nuts and signed Pacman into 2019. They force me to let Kirkpatrick go also. I hope Dennard and Jackson pan out. .......Eifert and Dennard. OK, What a mess.....What is the Bottom Line.....Getting rid of Kirkpatrick and Whitworth due to the Boling and Pacman contracts too high and getting rid of Peko, Hunt, Nugent, LaFell, Peerman, Dansby. Winston.....That right there is cutting 41 million but Zeitler gets franchise tag so lets say under 35 mil trimmed back. ...On these other free agents, I'm not paying them big money. If they want to walk, walk...Burkhead, Gilberry, Thompson, Brown, Johnson and Ott...They would trim 5.5 mil off the contracts and help to franchise tag Zeitler....So I'm back in the ball park of having 40 mil to rebuild this lousy team....I like the defense. Hated keeping Pacman over Kirkpatrick but that was Mike Brown, not me. ....The Offensive Line stinks. That needs addressed ASAP going into 2017. I refuse to have no blocking. ....I can do more than fill holes with 40 mil. I can get some real players in here via Free Agency and The Draft. Probably more the draft. I'm not above looking to Canadian Football or Arena Leagues for talent, if talent is there. If somebody can really block in Canada, I would take a look at him in a try out. Our All Pro RT in 1988 Super Bowl Year we got from Canadian Football League. Kurt Warner and Jay Gruden were Arena League. You have to think out of the box as bad as Bengals are. ...The Draft still probably best option. ...Don't blame me for Kirkpatrick and Whitworth gone. Mike Brown let their contracts run out while over paying others. Blame Mike Brown, Not me. ....I take the 40 mil plus whatever under budget team may have been before and try to field a winner in 2017. I think we have defense, but the offense is awful starting with the blocking. Unlike Mike Brown, I do see the need for quality offensive linemen. I would sit down and talk with Whit. Kirkpatrick and their agents, but it seems a lost cause. If they are not signed by now. they are probably as good as gone. The younger Zeitler I franchise tag. I can't franchise tag Kirky because of this insane Pacman contract and all the first round CBs team just drafted. I'm painted into a corner my first year by awful Mike Brown moves.
So if Bengals would hire a GM, which they won't...That new GM would have some lousy Mike Brown contracts that the GM would be forced to live with a few years. ....Any GM hired by Bengals would be shackled to the already existing lousy contracts. ....which force other players contracts not to be resigned at a higher going rate.....This however does not mean a winning team in 2017 is not possible. The Defense is good. The goal is to get an offensive line that can block. That is top priority. Hopefully these O Line draft picks of late get with it. The O Line coach swears by them, so his job and butt are on the line if they don't. Coach Lewis has one last contract year so it is win in 2017 or all coaches could get fired.
Of course Mike Brown thinks he is doing great and everything will remain the same. I played the WHAT IF I WAS GM GAME....but in the end Mike Brown thinks he is doing just great, and not much will change after the 3 or 4 win season.
I think you are going to be disappointed if you think you can replace Boling for $5 million a year. Or LaFell for $2.5 million. Whitworth and Krirkpatrick make $15.5 million this year. No way you can replace a top LT and CB for less than that. Peko is only making $3.5 million this year. You are not going to be able to sign a veteran DT for much less than that.
Bernard and Ray may be a little overpaid, but not by a lot. Pacman look soverpaid, but the contract was noit that far out of line when he signed it this offseason after playing so well last year.
Basically you are going to have to replace most of these guys with players still on their rookie contracts to save a lot of money.
