People insult him over it because the perception of Mike Brown is that he's a cheap ______ , and that extends to almost everything he does. Free agency, using UC's practice field instead of building his own (only owner to not have his own), renting TV units and AC to players, flying players in on coach and talking contract at Wendy's, driving an old Chevy Lumina, tiny towels, pop machines in players area, cheap clothes, sending free popcorn (cheap) as a way to woo season ticket buyers, hoarding compensatory picks, not offering free gatorade or deodorant (other teams do), not offering much guaranteed money on contracts - as a means to protect from injured players, etc etc etc.
All of this stuff is well documented. So it's not about one thing, it's about his overall perception due to many things.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.
