IIRC, Newton and Wilson both exploded in the 2nd half of that season, while Dalton got injured.
Dalton was on pace for 4,255 yards, 37 TDs (he had 25 passing and 3 rushing after 12 games), with the best passer rating in the NFL before he went down. On one of the hottest teams in the NFL. Had he finished out the season, he would've been a top 4 candidate along with Newton, Wilson and Brady.
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.
