I don't know anyone, either. It can apparently be quite a long procedure - up to 10+ hours if you're doing a full 4000-5000 hairs.
I'm sure it's not comfortable, but pain/discomfort is not something I've seen people complain about. Redness/pain/swelling seems to go away after just a few days.
As I understand it, hairs from the side/back of the head aren't nearly as susceptible to going bald, even after transplant. That's the risk if you have it done and the rest of your hair falls out. Of course, you could then just get a second procedure (but good work is not cheap!).
