Things really depend on the types of features you want on your site such as message boards, ease of editing, mail lists, shopping cart and so on.. If you only really need nothing more than a page to list basic information you can edit occasionally that's really simple stuff, but most hosting services offer a bunch of different things, data bases, several different types of quick install programs...
For a simple information page I'd go with WordPress which can be modified a zillion different ways with almost unlimited add-ons.
WordPress.com You can get it tied into your own domain or you can download the WordPress program and install it on your own site with your own domain(s).. There's also a very robust wordpress user community always willing to help you with questions and answers..
You can start off with the free version and add different add-on features as you become more comfortable with using it..

Maybe sign up for the free version, see how you like it. You can always get your domain name connected to it later on down the road and if you don't like it you're not out anything other than a few minutes of fiddling around with it..
Back when I was really involved with websites I used WordPress and added on a section with over 500 public domain movies people could watch and download. It had message boards, a shopping cart and the works. I lost my internet connection and the website host took my entire site down over lack of activity. I was also involved with helping to run a big message board with unrelated to football content.. I wouldn't get involved with running a message board now if someone paid me to do it . I really appreciate what they do here because with any message board you'll always have a fair amount of whiney bitches and spammers and so forth..I'm pretty sure the folks running the show here can testify to the amount of crap they have to delete on a daily basis..spammers trying to sell viagra and every other scam that people can think up..
