In my sport Strongman, typically athletes tend to come from either Powerlifting or Crossfit. The abundance of Crossfitters transitioning over to Strongman has given a surge of numbers increase to participants at the amateur level. However, traditional strength purists continue to make fun of them for the stupid things that their sport does to otherwise great exercises.
Crossfit is also notorious for bastardizing traditional Olympic lifts, by having athletes perform them for as many reps as possible, with bad form. Their "teaching standards" have led to serious injuries and shortened careers of many aspiring strength competitors.
Come to think of it, most of the silly exercise stuff I've seen in recent years has been Crossfit people.
We had to do pull-ups in the chow line before the drill sergeant would let us in to eat. And he expected you body to be straight up and down while you were doing them, none of this silly flopping business. That would have been considered cheating and no-good.
I impressed the hell out of him, though. I used to do them in a gymnast's L-position with my legs perpendicular to my upper body ( a little bit of extra work from the gut muscles, but it helps with keeping your balance and keeping upper body perfectly straight).
