With the right doctors, yes, ankle fractures can be overcome. The wrong pin placed in the wrong location / angle and you’re donzo. Hope he goes far outside the bengals medical staff for that evaluation. He deserves better for the rest of his life.

I’d hang ‘em up if I were him for sure. I went through a pretty bad ankle fracture a few years back and couldn’t imagine trying to rehab for additional years of that kind of pressure on a surgically repaired ankle.
