I'm talking specifically about his ability/inability to play through whatever injury he had.

Whether the injury was real or not, it seems some inside the building were convinced he wasn't giving his best to play through it. 

I don't see Lap being that bold unless he knew people that mattered felt that way. 
The training, nutrition, medicine, fitness, playbooks and rules evolve. The athlete does not.
