I think getting rid of George was a salary dump, motivated by the recent NFL rule changes.  Too many times, big George would go for the knockout hit, rather than playing the ball or setting up for a tackle.  I hate it, as I really liked him.  But, when it was just he and Shawn Williams back there, they struggled, unlike the days when Reggie Nelson was patrolling the back 1/3.
