Every year I have some kind of lawnmower horror story. I've snapped multiple bolts on decks leading to riding mowers falling apart mid-ride, hit a metal spike some idiot buried and nearly mowed myself in half, almost slid off a bank on a zero turn, etc. It's genetic. My grandmother caught two different mowers on fire and had similar problems.
I've got a tiny yard (less than half an acre and not all grass). Last year I went and bought an electric psuhmower. For the first time ever, no horror stories. Zero hassle. I sharpened the blades this season when I got it out of storage, charged the batteries and bam, back to cutting.
