I can see how it benefits the players.
With 12 rounds a team that needs a WR may draft 3 or 4 knowing they will only keep one. That means a lot of guys are getting drafted by teams that don't really need them. Teams that need WRs may still sign 3 or 4 UDFAs knowing they will keep only one, but the players have the chance to look around and see where they have the best shot of sticking.
