How To Make the Defense Legit

How to?  I like a kitchen sink type of defense that can cause confusion with different looks ala Steve Spagnuolo.  I like an identity shifting defense that can attack your tendencies and force you out of your comfort zone.  I like a defense that takes calculated risks, but doesn't get burnt to a crisp when they don't pay off.  I also like a defense that can win at the line of scrimmage.  Easier said than done haha.
