iphone 7 and above do not have a headphone jack, so you could plug the lightning dongle into the phone and use male to male cable, but then the phone cannot charge.  That's why I proposed the Bluetooth adapter plugged into that input on the car stereo.

I guess the best solution for Fred's case is going to be dependent on the model of phone.

I have not used male-to-male cable since back in college.  

Not to mention plugging my dongle into anything.
