Partial tears can heal on their own. If you completely tear a ligament, you have to get surgery if it's an important ligament. Some people tear ligaments in their knee and choose not to get surgery. The pain eventually goes away, but it's not like the ligament heals itself. I think it was Hines Ward who had no ACL.
