Rudolph started the fight by trying to rip off the helmet and kicking in Garrett in the boys. Garrett would have been justified in clocking him once for that. Garrett, however, went far and beyond that in a move that is only justified in true self defense, which this was not.

He's lucky he didn't crack Rudolph's head open.
