During WW2 the Japanese took control of Vietnam from the French colonialist who were running the country. At the end of the war when Japan surrendered to the allied forces Ho Cho Minh declare Vietnam to be a free country. In his speech to the Vietnamese people he used this quote “All men are created equal. They are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." and he sent a letter to President Truman asking the United States to help keep the French from re-taking the country. But we chose to back our white European allies instead of supporting freedom for some asian communist.
We lost that war based on a wrong decision back in the 1940's.
