He gained nothing by sitting out and significantly reduced his value in free agancy.
It makes perfect sense to me. If he plays and reinjures himself he is going to receive squat. If he plays and is ineffective his value drops not only in free agency but also to the Bengals. So sitting isn't really the worse thing that was going to happen.
