Not only that, but the Bengals had already publicly gave him their word that they would do right by him. Once it became obvious they couldn't get anything of value, this was the only other reasonable option that is beneficial to both parties.
It has absolutely nothing to do with fortitude or mental toughness. It has everything to do with business and practicality. Joe Burrow is the future and will be the starter. The Bengals need Andy's salary off the books. Andy wants an opportunity to compete in a situation where he would at least have a chance to start at some point.
Of course, he isn’t going to compete. He was talking about getting traded in October before Burrow was even in the picture. Andy never had to compete for the job under Marvin and he wasn’t going to start under the new regime. And apparently the Bengals weren’t going to trade him somewhere he didn’t want to go, e.g. compete for a starting job or be a back up.
