 I have a similar story. I burn my trash but you can't burn cans so the first year I moved back to WV I just kept collecting them for about a year and a half. I did this until someone told me about about a free dump day once a year where people actually collect cans for recycling. Well after a year and a half of collecting it took 3 trips with a full size truck. The best part is the free dump day is held by my grandparents catholic church.

Let's just say I crush my cans now you can get alot more into a bag that way lol.
