I am pretty sure he could have gotten a long term deal with less than $18 million (or whatever the FT is) in guaranteed money.

I am sure he would like to have a long term deal here, but the guaranteed money was the most important part.  And no one can blame Green.  It is exactly the same way with every other franchised player in the league.
