IIRC, only 4 NCAA athletes with sickle cell trait experienced a problem during one year. So it is rare, but possible. The key to preventing a tragedy is prevention along with awareness of what to look for and what to do.

But, I have to imagine the decision to play with sickle cell trait and the risk of Covid 19 would certainly make one think twice about the risk.
