He knows he ****** up, he just spoke without thinking first; the whole world does that.

For all we know he could have seen the depth chart 5 minutes before the earlier interview and was still letting it sink in and let his emotions get the better of him. Having time to reflect he knew he'd make a mistake and said as much.
