just listened to Dehner and Morrison’s HTPG podcast on the drive home and felt way better. They interviewed real doctors affiliated with professional sports organizations. 9 months on average plays it safe to get you cleared for contact, as the graph can heal within 6 months. The 12 month factor is entirely dependent on range of motion, strength, and psychological measurable benchmarks during rehab.
MCL tear, being an interior ligament, does not complicate the injury or timeline for return AT ALL and is common in 30-40% of these types of injuries. Initial diagnosis is similar to Carson’s injury. Wentz injury was ACL and LCL which does complicate timeline for return
The things that can complicate successful rehab and return to being the same career trajectory are cartilage and meniscus tears, which they may not know the full extent of until surgery happens
None of the doctors interviewed had any concerns about return in 2021 to the same mobility and athleticism, and knowing Joe’s mindset, any psychological barriers
