I've never actually been there, but my best friend moved here from Gary when we were in high school in the 90s. I didn't know the guy yet but we had a class together. I asked where he was from and he said Gary, the murder capital of the country.

"So, what, that makes you tough?" I asked him.

He laughed and said "hell no, that's why we left."

Southern Illinois is pretty country. I used to go on the run to Dexter,  MO. Good barbecue there. At Sikeston, mo is a restaurant called Lambert's,  worth a small drive. They literally throw rolls at you. You'll be stuffed when you leave!
