Like it or not, football is a game that is typically won and lost by the big men in the trenches.  Those dudes ain't Waltzing out there, they're pretty much brawling.  You want the group with the toughest bodies and the strongest minds to inflict their will upon another group of equally matched men.  The games are rarely "clean", the fighting gets dirty.  When times get tough, you need that Alpha dog to set an example for the rest of the unit to follow.
