That's my question  when I hear this. Fans will soon forget come October we decided to not improve the defense until 2022 as we call for Lou's head and job.

Even if no new defensive players from outside FA and just a couple players drafted, there should be an expectation the defense will improve.
The Bengals did not spend all that money on Waynes and Reader for them to not make a big impact.
If this team is not at least in the Top 20 in Points Allowed and Yards Allowed, they did not do a good enough job. Reader and Waynes alone are expected to help get them into that range. If not, they were not worth the investment.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.
