Bengals inked the New Kicker for a 3 year deal.
They say they are giving him a shot to unseat Nugent.
Financially I don't understand.
Article explains they'd have 600k in dead money this year, + cash owed Obraski if they cut Nugent.
I'd love to see real competition at Kicker.
Adding Stats
Here are some good stats on him. Per Cincy Jungle.
Obarski holds a slew of Concordia records including:
Field goals made (44)
Career points for a kicker (250)
Single game record for field goals made, (set four times during career, three times in 2014, once in 2013).
Second most points for a kicker in a single game (14) and the third most points in a game for kicker (13).
He also holds a school and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference record for longest field goal (59, vs Augustana) and delivered NCAA Division II record-long field goals twice during career (59 vs Augustana, 56 vs Upper Iowa).
Obarski was one of few kickers selected to play in the Senior Bowl, where he impressed scouts by making a 49-yard field goal. CBS Sports ranks Obarski as the draft's eighth-best kicker.

I don't believe it either, but we can dream, I guess.

I think we saw one last year in pre-season. They just chose to stay the course.

I think last year with Quinn, sharp he only signed a 1 year deal. Easy to terminate. This says obraski signed a 3 year deal. Could be wrong though.

Competition's a good thing, right?
My guess is if the competition is close, Nuge gets the job. The new guy will probably have to be decidedly better to win the job, imo.

If memory serves... Sharp hit every field goal last preseason and Nugent missed 1 still
got the job.

Would be nice to have a guy consistently bury kickoffs. Nuge does a pretty good job with those high kicks that land around the goal line and the returner can't even get to the 20.
Sometimes, say, when you have a scary returner, you just want to kick it out of the end zone and be done with it.
How significant is the three year deal? Seems significant.
Nuge had the bad stretch last year but finished strong. OTOH, once a kicker has a rough stretch, that seed is planted.
Will be interesting to watch it play out. Nuge costs more. Is that a factor in the end?

This kid Obarski only hit 69.8% of his kicks (44-63). That's abysmal.
I don't see how he offers much competition for Nuge, even though Nuge is one of the NFL's worst.

A few thoughts.
Nuge isn't terrible. He had a shaky bit there in the beginning of the year. Probably enough so to be fired from about 30 of the other 31 teams. But he bounced back quite nicely. Probably our MVP in the playoff game too. Not sure if I should put a or a I would like to find a kicker that is more reliable from outside 45 yards though.
The Bengals love Nugent. I find it tough to believe that anyone will unseat him.
But I'll maintain that we never should've let Josh Brown walk out the door.

No NFL kicker is terrible, at least not these days. I don't have the exact numbers, but Nuge is statistically one of the NFL's worst over the last few seasons. He did rebound quite nicely last season, which was surprising after the horrific start to the year. Most kickers are fragile and don't rebound so easily.

Idk why we have kickers who are basically automatic for 2 or 3 years and then they crash and burn while other teams have consistent kickers for 5-10 years who are great.

Obarski made three field goals of at least 56 yards, including a school-record 59-yarder as a sophomore. Can't wait to see how he looks in camp.
Nugent missed all three of his attempts of 50 yards or more last season.

This right here.
Last year I said we needed to part ways with BJGE. This year its Nugent. I like the guy but his leg has become a noodle.
I do not feel comfortable with him lining up to kick anything over 45 yds. Especially if the game is on the line.
Its going to be pretty interesting. Nugent is on his way down and we just brought in a young strong leg. I don't care if Nugent handles kicks under 40 and this kid kicks the longer ones and kickoffs for a year.

Not to mention a game-winning chip-shot.

I didn't understand why they resigned Nugent - just to bring in competition against him. Don't know if they are just looking at savings beyond this year to re-ink next years big tickets (AJ and Co.)., or if this is really just a camp and preseason game body in order to keep the Nuge healthy for the season. Thoughts?

It doesn't make sense. They signed Nugent before they scouted this kid. (I think).
You see something that says "Maybe we move on from the norm"
The fact Obraski signed a 3 year deal is what is significant according to the article.

I would like to believe there's a legit competition for the kicking job, but this team is so committed to Nugent that it's frightening.

Nugent is an easily replaceable talent. He's among the league's worst on touchback percentage, and does not have the leg to hit consistently from 50+. The Bengaos aren't likely to carry a kickoff specialist to mask the Nuge's deficiences. Josh Brown was a better option. Quinn Sharp very well might have been. The newb from Concordia might be, and will be cheaper.

Playoff Record: 5-9, .357 winning pct.
Zac Taylor coaching record, reg. season: 37-44-1. .455 winning pct.
Playoff Record: 5-2, .714 winning pct.

If money/cap is an issue with upcoming contracts we can gamble and go with a younger (cheaper) kicker.
