I'll sum up my thoughts as this:
-The cinematography was amazing. Better than any other Star Wars movie. The shots on Crait during the stand off were incredible -The story telling was heavily flawed -There were too many plot holes or plot points completely thrown away -Superman Leia was dumb and not in line with anything Force related that we've really seen -The Legend of Luke Skywalker is great... but I am not sure that's the death he needed -Who is Snoke and why is he so powerfu... never mind. He dead. -Wait, why are we calling the Resistance rebels? They're not rebels. -How has the First Order taken over the galaxy in a matter of hours after the Republic's capital was destroyed. Ideally every system has their own government and Republic forces and/or officials there. -Still don't know how the First Order evolved or grew

I hate to say this but that was a terrible movie ...
The Leia scene took me out of the movie while it took time for me to get in because the opening scene is just so bad. ( Poe and Hux ). Luke is depicted as a coward, a psycho or a pyroman, that was just not Luke Skywalker. You got characters killed and you don't care because you have no explanations where they come from. They just come and go. They bring new useless characters while not developing the main ones. It was lazy, lazy writing I didn't get into the humour at all. I have the feeling that someone farted in my sheets.

It sounds like a lot of the marvel movies.... Amazing visuals... Horrible story
Was it even fan service? so we can call it EYe Candy Fan service? I haven't watched 7 yet so probly be a while before I see this one. I really didn't like rouge 1 other than a few scenes the action was good but like what Pat mentioned about 8. There is no attachment to the characters. And JJ is doing 9 right? which means he will probly copy a lot of material from previous movies. and rehash it.

Pretty much everything you've stated is dead on, and it seems like they are trying to force love triangles on us with Rey/Finn/Whatever her name was and Rey/Finn/Ren. They aren't neccessary. And the battle between Finn and Captain Phasma was pretty lackluster, with a very anti-climactic death for Phasma. And the Admiral, the #2 in command, is the lone soul left on command ship for the suicide mission? Nope, that's not how it would ever play out.

Is it rated [PG], [PG-13], [R], or [NC-17]?

Case in point, the statement that the distress call was received, but nobody was coming to help them. Why? What prevented allies to come to their aid? They could easily be under attack by another battalion of the First Order, with a spin off movie telling that tale and adding other details to the main story line. Similar to what they did with Rogue One.

Of the 9 Star Wars movies so far, I probably have this one around 7 or 8 overall. Attack of the Clones is my least favorite, so this is above that.
The whole casino segment with it getting a bit too political in there was terrible overall. No reveal on who Reys parents were still, but maybe they were afraid of saying because it would mimic Empire somehow. (how would Kylo even know?). Who is Snoke? Nothing about him was revealed. Yet he was briefly portrayed as an extremely powerful Sith and was the leader of the First Order. Luke was only the Luke that I know for the last few minutes he was in the movie. At least in Force Awakens Han was actually Han for the whole movie. The whole Rey and Luke training thing should have been better done. Bring in Yoda with Rey, or ObiWan even. Just felt incomplete. Lea's superman act I mean cmon. Why still no R2? He is just an afterthought in these new movies. FFS its R2! So Phasma shows up then apparently dies in a few minutes? That character is so underused its a bit mindboggling. Yet the new resistance girl that kisses Finn and somehow knocks him out of the suicide run (which doesnt make sense) got a ton more screen time than Phasma. Not even an interesting character. My final score 6/10 , and I really hate having to admit to it cause I wanted this one to be better than Force Awakens which I did enjoy. “Don't give up. Don't ever give up.” - Jimmy V

Finally saw it today, and I am completely on the fence.
There are some parts that I absolutely loved. Jaded Luke, Ren/Rey connection (pretty much everything Kylo Ren actually), and the cinematography was indeed great. (Unpopular opinion: I actually like what they did with Snoke) There were other things I absolutely hated however. Leia surviving space, the clunky Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Esque humor, space battles that run too long. Overall I thought it was a good movie with some significant flaws given the universe that it occupies.

One other thing, who the eff is Rian Johnson, the one the one they hired to make this new SJW movie? Woops I mean SW. What a terrible decision on Disney's part. This isnt some typical movie, its flippin a Star Wars movie in the series.
I'll have to see it again, but it very well could up beng a 5/10 movie, maybe even the worst SW movie to date. Its pretty close to the Clones at the moment tho. “Don't give up. Don't ever give up.” - Jimmy V

I dunno if the new trilogy avoids it because of the prequels or because there just aren't any potential combatants, but I really hope we get an epic lightsaber duel between Rey and Kylo in Episode IX. Maybe it's because outside of Obi Wan the duels were the only thing done well in the prequels, but I really wanted to see some lightsaber badassery between Luke and Kylo at the end.

Definitely the worst SW ever.
On the bottom of the list.

Similar to what they did with Rogue One. I agree. I don't get the hate for it. It was a lot of fun to watch, and brought back a lot of memories from my childhood. I can't see it as being even in the same breath as the prequels. They weren't even entertaining......and then add Jar Jar to the whole mix? Yeah, this was a MUCH better film. There were some parts that were questionable, like Leia surviving space....but overall, I liked the movie, and was entertained by it. It's not "A New Hope", or "Empire Strikes Back", but it was maybe better than "Return of the Jedi". "Better send those refunds..."

My son (17) and I watched it. He generally loves everything Star Wars, but has the same teen attitude of hating everything else. We both pretty well hated it. I spoke to two of my closest friends who love all-things Star Wars... they both loved the movie.
Lots of spoilers below. To me, what they did wrong: — Forced humor. From the opening scene on, there were too many forced jokes. And the opening scene pretty well wasted Hux as being anything intimidating again ever. I spent the rest of the movie wondering if someone was going to say "Hey, Huxie, your fly is down" and then laugh when he looked. Or maybe a character look at the camera and wink. — Irrelevant deaths. Or non deaths, like Finn. He spent most of the movie as an irrelevant character. Had a chance to became an important part of the franchise and then... nope... irrelevant again. They shouldn't have given him any speaking lines this movie, his irrelevancy could have been achieved with a cardboard cut out lugged around by the mechanic chick. Then there's Luke. What a waste. Basically his role in this movie was to buy the remaining rebels time to escape. They killed off arguably one of the franchise's top 5 characters for the same thing a well placed thermite grande would've done. And Snoke. Who wrote this ****ing story, Stephen King? He's the only guy I know who builds up characters to be ultimate badd asses... and then has them be so disappointing. Oh, and that's about the same story as Phasma. "You can't stop me! My armor can withstand point blank blaster shots... oops, oh craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!" — As mentioned, major plot holes. Or just stuff left out. We're in the second movie and there's still no word of what BenRen did with the padawans he took after fighting Luke. Are those the guards in Snoke's chamber? Did he eat them? Really a huge missed opportunity to introduce some much needed action here. And when is the Empire going to learn to stop putting giant, poorly defended holes in the middle of their ultimate death machines? One X-Wing and some bombs easily took out the biggest ship they have? Jeez. — Bad storytelling/directing The final scene on the salt planet was one of the better ones, but the entire speeder fight felt like a Fast & the Furious movie. They were going in one direction and slamming the throttle forward constantly. I kept feeling like Dominic Toretto was going to pull alongside Poe, give a two finger salute, down shift and then there would be a cutscene with the Death Star blowing up. Does that make sense? No... and neither did half this movie. I will say, though, that the light speed suicide jump was well done. That, and the credits. Other than that, what a freaking horrible movie. |
