Zimmer had 3 top 10 defenses in Dallas and was 13th the year prior to leaving for Atlanta, where they ranked 29th. There was good reason to think that his year in Atlanta was an outlier.

His resume as far as a DC? Or in general? Cause as a DB’s coach he’s been pretty successful. 3 SB appearances and won a ring. Experience coaching at some big time schools too (Michigan & Florida), so hopefully he can get his players ready for big games.

We'll have none of that context and common sense here sir.
Merv hired this guy, so he MUST be good....yet Merv drafted and starts 14...but 14 sucks....I'm starting to get confused.....lol.

I did say I trust Marvin more on the defensive side of the ball...

13th you say!! Yeah. I'm sure folks around here dismissed the outlier.

Well....he's got one thing going for him.....he comes from a team as inept as Mediocre Merv's Bengals when it comes to winning anything that matters. He'll fit right in, no doubt
PS....I think the 3rd was not the norm.....peep the numbers

Not to mention that was the year Mike Vick got hurt in the pre-season and the team pretty much quit after that. Heck, their Head Coach quit. Remember Zim's "gutless" comment?

I'm told Teryl Austin is going to accept the #Bengals offer to become their defensive coordinator, per source.
I like his resume. Coached under D Guru Joe Paterno. Then coached at Wake Forest, Syracuse, Michigan under Lloyd Carr....Coached Seattle Seahawks under Mike Holmgren to Super Bowl....Coached Arizona Cardinals under Ken Whisenhunt to Super Bowl...Defensive Coordinator under Urban Meyer at Florida Gators....Coached Baltimore Ravens under Harbaugh to Super Bowl Win....Defensive Coordinator at Detroit Lions under Jim Caldwell and Lions were considered one of better Defenses in NFL.....Jon Gruden was trying to hire him to Raiders when he accepted Bengals offer. ....I liked that Zimmer had worked under good coaches and I like that Austin has worked under some top coaches. Like Hall Of Fame LeBeau he has Defensive Back Coach experience AND Defensive Coordinator experience.
Looking this thing over, Defensive Coach of 3 different Super Bowl Teams...Joe Paterno, Lloyd Carr, Mike Holmgren, Ken Whisenhunt, Urban Meyer, John Harbaugh, Jim Caldwell.....I would say Bengals are LUCKY to be getting this guy.

Here's an interesting profile written about Austin from the perspective of a Chicago Bears Blogger regarding the possibility of hiring him as their head coach back in September 2017:
http://sportsmockery.com/2017/09/teryl-austin-chicago-bears-2018-head-coach-profile/
Gives some information on his successes on other teams as well as the connections he's made in the NFL and concerns about hiring him. The main concern they had was regarding his lack of experience developing a QB, which is not a concern when hiring him as a DC.
I think this is a good hire.

Well, the home page fluff piece on him says his 1st rule is don't beat yourselves..... at least he has that one right. I think it's going to be an interesting season.

Let’s be real for a moment: The Bengals have a weak secondary — not the players — but the scheme. It’s too loose and allows too many chunk plays. Dre Kirkpatrick, George Iloka, Darqueze Dennard, and William Jackson III are too talented to be held back by a substandard scheme.
I was on Detroit’s message board earlier and the Lions’ fans are sad to see Teryl Austin go. They thought he did a great job considering such meager talent he had to work with and they also thought coaching a talent-laden team like the Bengals was a good job to get.
Yea, I'd very much like to see the Bengals DBs have more of an emphasis on turnovers. Didn't feel like a priority with Guenther+Coyle.
With Austin as the DC, it might also mean a bigger priority on S in the draft and/or trying creative moves like Shaw to FS and Williams to nickel LB.
Zac Taylor 2019-2020: 6 total wins
Zac Taylor 2021-2022: Double-digit wins each season, plus 5 postseason wins
Zac Taylor 2023: 9 wins despite losing Burrow half the season
Zac Taylor 2024: Started 1-4. If he can turn this into a playoff appearance, it will be impressive.

Wrong year; that was the year Mike Vick killed dogs and got caught.

Stop teasing! I had a wet dream about this last night!!
Anyways.... I sure as hell hope so. We need to at least find a suitable starter at SS, Shawn ain't cutting it. Derwin James is my sexy pick at #12, but we really need o-line so it's cool.

Doesn't Williams actually line up more at FS?
Besides, what I'd prefer is to have Iloka more as the SS and he's perfectly fine there.
The Bengals need to find more of a ball hawk for FS IMO.

Shawn is listed as SS but I'm not sure as to how many snaps he gets where.
Yeah Derwin doesn't really fit that mold, he's more of a Sean Taylor (R.I.P.) type safety, but it's a deep enough class this year for safeties and I'm sure we can find one.
Should've taken Hooker

Alas the front page fluff also says he doesn't like to blitz a lot or play press man coverage. That sounds like more of letting offenses march up and down the field against our soft one.

Another "bend-don't-break" defense with an emphasis on turnovers.
Sounds like Bresnahan to me.
