Well it seems every time I do a mock they make another very good off-season FA move and I really like that. I would think that with the dollars they have spent up to this point that their moves are pretty much done so here is my mock after the moves to land a LT, ILB, and backup QB:
Round 1 - 21st Selection:
James Daniels - C - Iowa - 6'3" 295:
Being a die hard OSU fan it is hard not to select Billy Price here but if Daniels were gone I would not have any problem doing so. I feel Daniels is the best C prospect in this draft and if he is available at this point I would waste no time with the selection. I think at the next level they are going to beef him up but he has the frame to carry more mass without it effecting his quickness. He has very functional strength for the position and should only get stronger with a NFL workout regimen. Comes from a conference where they are known for big strong interior defensive linemen and held up extremely well. I see Pro Bowls in this young mans future.
Round 2 - Selection 14: (had about 3 targets here and traded back with Arizona while getting their 3rd round selection as well as the 15th selection in 4th that they acquired from Chicago)
Will Hernandez - OG - UTEP - 6'2" 348:
Let me start by saying I do not in anyway see Hernandez being here at this point in the draft. However, if he is I spring to the podium with the selection. We have not seen an immovable force such as him since Bobbie Williams. I see Hernandez stepping immediately in the starting RG position and being there for many years. He is a monster! Shear power at the position.
Round 3 - 15th selection:
Tim Settle - DT - Virginia Tech - 6'3" 335:
Billings flashes but has just shown no consistency beside Atkins. After addressing the OL in the 1st and 2nd I opted to find take a guy that I feel will absolutely compliment Atkins. The reports on Settle is that he is a very coachable player that responds to challenges from his coaching staff. The VT coaching staff has stated that he plays with "infectious energy". Very good suddenness and quickness from a man his size. Is a guy that pushes the pocket in the passing game and is excellent run stuffer.
Round 3 - Selection 36:
Jessie Bates lll - FS - Wake Forest - 6'1" 200:
We have sorely missed a playmaker on the backend of the defense since Reggie Nelson left and I think Bates gives us that guy. He is a very good center fielder with ball skills who has man coverage ability. I think the big question will be who hits the bench Williams or Illoka?
Round 4 - 12th Selection:
Orlando Brown - OT - Oklahoma - 6'8" 360:
Prior to the combine I was not comfortable with him as a NFL LT but I saw him as an outstanding RT. After the combine I felt exactly the same way. Many fans will try to judge him off of a poor combine performance which will be ridiculous when actual game film shows the real story. The reports are that he had a good workout at his Pro Day and that our coaches were in attendance. I do not see him still being here this late but if he is I would not hesitate in selecting him.
Joe Mixon will be thrilled to see Brown, Hernandez, and Daniels going from right to center. This should make for a very imposing power running game.
Round 4 - 15th selection:
Michael Dickson -P- Texas - 6'3" 205:
Yes it is hard to take a specialist here but it is a move that makes sense in several ways. First and foremost the guy is a special talent at the position. You do not see guys with this ability to flip the field and hit spots like he does every season. From a business perspective we made several FA moves that pushed this franchise past the mark it wanted to be at from a dollar perspective. If we can get younger at the position while dropping salary at the same time then it is a win on both fronts.
Yes Huber is a fan favorite and a local product but at the end of the day it is still a business and moves have to be made that make sense from a talent and business perspective while putting emotional involvement aside. Fans may complain about the move but they also complain about the team not improving as they like. Make it a an absolute open and even competition and may the most talented player win.
Round 5 - 15th Selection:
Luke Falk - QB - Washington State - 6'4" 225:
Yep we signed a backup QB and yes we have Driskel. That is all good and well but at the end of the day it is about value and talent. I think Falk has legit NFL talent and can be more than a backup. He shows extremely good accuracy and mobility in the pocket. I feel Falk is a kid that can be developed while a backup and be in line to take a starting position and be a legit starting QB at that time. I think Barkley has a ceiling of capable backup and I could actually see Driskel at #2 and Falk #3 at the end of camp and Barkley being released.
Round 5 - 21st Selection:
Daniel Carlson - K - Auburn - 6'5" 213:
Anyone tired of holding their breath every time Brown lines up to kick? I was not happy with the release of Elliott last season and his performance with Philly showed why. I think we get it right this time with the selection of Carlson. He had some mechanics issues last season but I do not think it is anything that Simmons cannot work out. He has a big time leg from beyond the 50 and has had some punting experience as well so would give us an emergency option there.
Round 5 - 33rd Selection:
Jaleel Scott - WR - New Mexico State - 6'5" 215:
Still a raw prospect but has outstanding hands and body control. Large catch radius and a serious redzone threat. Not a burner but ran a mid 4.5 but always a deep threat because of his size, leaping ability, and how he challenges for the ball. This young man has a really high ceiling at the next level as he develops his game.
Round 7 - 12th Selection:
Brandon Facyson - CB - Virginia Tech - 6'2" 197:
Has been compared to Daryl Worley. Has great size and length for the position with decent speed for the position. Plays with good physicality. Very good leaping ability to challenge catches and does so without playing thru the receiver. Has some things to work on with technique but appears to be a kid that can be developed and challenge for a roster spot. Has the size to play safety in an emergency role as well.
Round 7 - 34th Selection:
Peter Kalambayi - OLB - Stanford - 6'3" 252:
A developmental OLB that looks like he could fit the bill as a 4-3 SLB. Has shown above average speed for the position and while not used a lot in coverage when he did he showed some positive attributes. Good pursuit speed in the run game and solid tackler. Obviously as a Stanford player has some smarts to him.
Round 7 - 35th Selection:
Aaron Stinnie - OL - James Madison - 6'5" 309:
A former defensive lineman so comes with the nasty attitude you want. Has only been playing O line for two seasons but almost immediately became the starting LT for James Madison. Seems to have made the move rather seamlessly. Showed very good quickness and agility in the passing game as well as the ability to be a power run blocker. As stated has only been playing O line for two years so you would have to think that he will vastly improve with more coaching at the position. Has the build and has shown the power to be able to move inside as well.
Well there it is and barring anymore major moves by this team this is the draft I will stand on!
