Yes, but he likely compares himself to his peers, not people who make $30k per year. Is Ryan Leaf embarrassed that he was a giant bust compared to other NFL 1st round QB, or should he just be happy he isn't a nobody? 

By that logic I'd never need to feel embarrassed by my failures because there are people on this earth who are broke and starving.  Wait...that makes complete sense!  Never mind.
