This won't end well. But maybe it's a sign of the vets not returning next season (and them getting nothing for them).
I'm with you... lets get some picks out of our vets for once instead of letting them hit free-agency for nothing.

If their goal is to stop the run, this is probably for the better. They have to make Baltimore beat them through the air. Lawson is probably our best run stopper DE at least according to the data, so a smart move. I wonder if this will be permanent though.

That's the reason the Bengals were able to get him in the bottom half of the 2nd round in the first place.
That said, I don't know how much of it right now is a lack of motivation and how much of it is simply him not being used to not having Atkins in the middle taking all the attention away from him. You remove Atkins from the DL and all of a sudden that's an extra blocker free that's not needed on that double team.
Dunlap (and Hubbard) are guys who I think are good starters who'll have occasional games that they can take over, but ultimately aren't true big time difference makers. They are guys who you'd be absolutely ecstatic to have as your #2 DE, but aren't quite what you'd hope from your leading edge rusher.
Last season there were 18 players with double digit sacks. In 2018 there were 22 (Atkins was one of them).
Dunlap has 1 double digit sack season to his name and it was in 2015. Sam Hubbard has 0.
They're Jadeveon Clowney (2018), but the Bengals lack a JJ Watt.
They're Marcus Ware (2015), but the Bengals lack a Von Miller.

All that said, I can't help but feel that Carl Lawson being the starter is going to backfire.
He's either going to get hurt, or he's going to be MUCH less effective rushing the passer because he's going to have to spend energy doing other things as well.
Don't forget that Dunlap's second highest sack total came his rookie year when he made 0 starts and he was just a pass rushing specialist.

Dunlap has always had a problem with motivation going back to Florida.
He can be a special player when he wants to be. Zimmer seemed to get the most out of him.

I feel like Dunlap has overcome the Florida rep and has been really good for us. I don't think we should slam the guy.
Dunlap DESTROYED RGIII when we played Washington his rookie year (if anyone remembers that great game). Set the edge and showed the league how to defeat him (hit him even when he handed the ball off as QB's are open to be hit during read options which the league has forgot with Lamar).

Yeah sure, they probably should've sat down and told him before posting it in the clubhouse or wherever they post such things. But Dunlap is still being a total whinebag about it. Suck it up, work harder, and get your job back. He's the one who made his demotion "public" not the Bengals.
I remember Marvin once saying that he talked to Dunlap's dad - a military man - after we drafted him, and even his dad said that you needed to keep your foot up his ass - and those were his exact words - to keep him motivated. No way he's back next year.
High priced vets in noticeable decline aren't so easy to trade, but it's not impossible. A whole lot of stars would have to align just right. Somebody desperate at DE. Either somebody with cap room, or we'd have to agree to swallow some of his salary. If we're doing that we'd need pretty healthy compensation, so that's another thing to negotiate. Sure would help if he starts playing better, at least getting some sacks, and if we win another game before the trade deadline we'll still be in mathematical contention so I doubt we'd trade anybody. Chances of a Dunlap trade are in the single digits in my opinion.

I'm not sure I understand your complaint. They posted a depth chart, and he's upset he's not at the top. What would you have them do?

I have to admit, the irony in this situation is quite amusing.
Carlos Dunlap is upset the team didn't privately meet with him prior to posting their weekly depth chart.
Carlos Dunlap decides to publically complain about said depth chart.

Lawson's outplaying him right now. Better player gets the start.
Everything in this post is my fault.

Carlos runs hot and cold. The Bengals want more consistency
From that DE spot. Carlos could have more impact
With less snaps.
He certinally failed from.keeping Wentz out of the endzone.
Why? Cause he didnt have the 4th juice to stop him

1.) Don't post a depth chart there is literally zero point in doing it considering that he is going to be playing over 50% of the game anyways.
2.) They could pulled him aside and told him before today. They had all Tuesday and Wednesday to do so.

Every team posts a depth chart. Do you not understand how this works?
If he's going to playing over 50% then why doesn't take a midol and keep his mouth shut?
This now the 2nd time in the last few months he's come out publically complained about the team. The first being when he decided to blast the team for not doing more for racial equality.
I'd suggest he'd be thankful he's making 11 million depsite having zero sacks this far, and try to focus on improving his play so his name is back atop the chart. Until then, try being a little bit team player and at least keep your bitching to behind close doors. Or better yet, don't ***** at all.

This isn't Marvin's Bengals anymore.... the best players play. That's what everyone wanted, right? If 'Los wants his starting gig back, there's one way to get it back, go out and take it back. Stop whining. He's been whining since he got kicked out of the park.

maybe he should be less concerned with being asked to leave a park during a covid lockdown and more concerned with his profession.

He has been, except for this year. Hubbard and Lawson are 20th and 27th in total QB pressures this year.
Dunlap is 38th.
They have 10 and 11 stops, in the run game, respectively.
Dunlap has 6.
I'm chalking it up to a slow start but i do like seeing the coaches not stand pat when someone else is playing better.
