Released VS Waived Vs Cut

Can someone explain the differences between these different types of moves?
In my mind:
"Release" like with Gio and Geno, they are still under contract and we still have pay it out but it does not impact our cap?
"Waived" - Is someone still under contract and if some other teams claims him they take on the salary? this one is still muddy to me.
"cut" - for 1st yr players (draft picks and FAs) that don't make final roster. Once they are cut, we are done paying anything further.

Here is a great article on it. It basically comes down to years of service. Waived applies to players with less than four years of service and they must go through waivers. Released refers to players with more than four years of service and they may sign with any club without going through waivers.

Cut is an unofficial term and refers to one of the two above. There are exceptions to the waiver system which is explained further below.
