Chase Contract and Cap all teams

I found it interesting looking at Spotrac cap numbers and how the Bengals structured the Chase contract in 2021 to be a lower cap hit in year one. Does this mean we are not done with trades or FA?

SORRY TRIED TO EDIT THIS TO LOOK BETTER, BUT IN YEAR ONE THE CAP HIT IS 5.6 MILLION, YEAR 2 IS 7 MILLION, YEAR 3 IS 8.4 MILLION AND YEAR 5 IS 9.8 MILLION.

Also, looking around at other teams, there are teams with more cap space than us, but have not signed their 1st round pick. Others are in bad cap situations with little to no cap money which could create more cap casualties very soon.

We still have some holes on depth at OT, LB and I would love Etrz, I think we have the money to do more prior to start of camp and still extend #1 priority Bates and maybe Hubbard, but Bates will be the expensive extension.

Thoughts?

A lot of contracts are structured this way (cap hit rises each year), and they almost always are with the Bengals.

Fwiw, here are Joe Burrow's cap hits for comparison:

2020 - 6.5
2021 - 8.2
2022 - 9.8

I definitely don't think the Bengals are done, but I also think they need money left over for Bates & Hubbard

I assume most teams do this because the cap usually gets bigger every year.  Although the total amount goes up each year it might actually be a smaller "percentage of the total cap".

Bates is easily the priority of those two.

No doubt.  But if we give Hubbard an extension and not Bates we will never know if the Bengals valued Hubbard more or if Bates just did not trust a long term contract with the Bengals.  Hubbard is more of a local boy and would be more likely to take a chance with the Bengals.

Most Bengal contract extensions are announced during pre-season/training camp.  Unless we sign some other pretty big free agent it will be a very bad sign if we do not get an extension worked out with either of them.
