Claude Shannon was an American mathematician who wrote a 1948 paper and theory he called information theory which paved the way for the very reason you're reading this today. He came up with 0's and 1's to transmit massive amounts of data accurately very quickly and the notion that the data had to be compressed.. He basically invented artificial intelligence before artificial intelligence, the first chess playing game and revolutionized communication forever.. Some people argue he was the most influential person to ever live in the modern world. That's some heavy duty stuff..
He died at 85 in 2001 in Massachusetts.
