Chris Evans...a bigger role?
#1
Joe Mixon was 3rd in the NFL in touches last year with 334, a career high. Sure, he had the big contract, but I can't help but think that the Bengals see a bigger role for Evans in 2022.

In 2021, Evans had 17 carries for 77 yards, a 4.5 YPC average. He also hauled in 15 receptions for 151 yards and two TDs.

Perhaps the play in the Super Bowl, I believe it was in the 4th quarter, Bengals up by 4, 3rd and 2, they threw him the ball and he converted the first down. He also was the Kickoff Return specialist for the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

I think Evans showed the dedication by taking on a role he had only executed once as a KR, was solid on coverage units, and made the most of his opportunities.

This isn't meant to be a dig a Perine, but I think Evans has another piece as a downfield receiver that Perine lacks. Dan Hoard in a recent interview commented how Evans' looks bigger and stronger, especially in his lower half.

I'm very excited to see what Evans can do in a bigger role to help keep Mixon fresh and add another dynamic as a receiver.

The only way I see Evans being used more is if injuries occur to Perine/Mixon or one of the big 3

I don't know.  Perine had that bobbled catch that turned in to an INT against the Titans and couldn't get one yard on 3rd and 1 on his biggest carry of his career.  I just see him as very average.  Evans has an upside I would like to explore.

The next week they threw Perine a screen and he took it to the house against KC

So it obviously didn’t change what the coaches thought.

This reminds me of the people who were clamoring for Burkhead to get more touches. Fans have their own imaginations and realities that differ from the coaches’

I think Burkhead should have got more touches.

Hue Jackson commented that they were surprised how well Burkhead ran routes when they needed him to play WR.  This, despite having the fastest short shuttle time in his entire draft class.  The Pats must have agreed because they found a role for him as a 3rd down/rotational back.  So, no, the coaches don't always know everything.  Marvin stuck with vets WAY too long when they weren't producing and didn't have a competitive environment for their spots.

Evans isn’t seeing the field unless injuries occur. Bottom line

And Burkhead was not better than Hill, Bernard, Boyd, Marvin Jones, Sanu, Green, Eifert, and Gresham.

just like Evans isn’t better than the big 3, Hurst, and Mixon.

Chris Evans is unknown to you, and you’re intrigued by it. The coaches know Chris Evans. The coaches knew Burkhead. If he was as talented as you think, he would have been on the field more than Perine

His yards per carry were good although a small sample size. Also not recalling each game he played in I'm curious when those carries occurred. Just looking at his game logs on pro football reference many of his carries were in blow out games. 4 during the 34-11 win over Detroit, 5 in the 41-10 win over Pit but 7 carries in the final game against the Browns. So I wonder if many of those carries were against the opposing team's starting defense.

Of course I'm not rooting against him and if he can step up and be a good complimentary RB I'd be all for it.

As with Mixon I'm anxious to see how Evans does behind the new Oline.

Evans will get more playing time this season becaus of his receiving value. Perine is a solid back and a nice workhorse if Mixon gets injured but Evans is the better 3rd down back.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

Receiving value? Burrow is gonna throw to his wide receivers and tight ends. Down field.

And unless Evans learns how to pass protect better than Perine, he ain’t seeing the field as much as you want him to.

There’s a reason Mixon doesn’t catch a lot of passes. It’s because he’s bad at pass protection

He had a good game last season against Detroit and then was promptly injured the next week in practice and missed multiple games and never seemed to regain his momentum. So it would be nice to see what he can do heading into 2022

I like Chris Evans. Do I think he's special?... No. I don't overly think Joe Mixon is either. I do know that Evans and another back are cheaper than Mixon moving forward though, and it's probably time to start moving that direction. I'd like to keep Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. I think not paying expendable RBs will help make that a reality. I'd like them to phase Evans in, and see what they have there.

No doubt. Expecting Evans to have a much bigger role in his sophomore season. Need to use Mixon and him in different
scenarios where we have both on the field at the same time and use them in the passing game to keep Defenses off guard
and unprepared for an unpredictable Offense where we can also run out of these schemes if Burrow sees something.

Not what I see. Evans was a rookie last season which is why he was only used sparingly and more as the year went on.

He will be used more, bet on it Frank. Mellow

He will be used more. But he’ll still be the 3rd guy behind Perine until he can pass protect

I’ve mentioned this several times. JMO is that Evans does not replace Perine because he doesn’t fit what Samaje brings. Evans is not experienced in pass pro or a tough inside runner. Samaje regardless what people think is the best pass blocker ( includes the mental aspect) and the best in short yardage. He’s strong and doesn’t give up on the play. He also spells Mixon on third down and long because they aren’t throwing it to the running back unless he’s the last option. Perine also plays on every special team and Simmons loves him. But… I I’d like to see more of Evans too. But what they should do is give Evans a series or two each half and have Mixon play more on short yardage and all third downs. So Evans spells Mixon
every now and then and Mixon goes in for Evans on all third downs.

3rd down in the Super Bowl in the 1st quarter and the coaches called on Perine. Final drive in the Super Bowl and the Bengals had Perine in it.

That doesn't sound like someone who is going to give up snaps to Evans. The coaches for whatever reason love them some Perine.

Agreed. Even though if he were cut, there would be no dead money, he’s still kinda cap friendly for an involved player. I personally am intrigued by Evans, but I certainly wouldn’t expect them to put their eggs in that basket yet for a contending team.
