We could start resigning our own free agents right?

What is the cut date on Mixon to maximize the most money saved?

They'll need to designate him as a post June 1 cut, in order to see around $10M saved.  I think that it's around $7M saved if he's listed as a pre-June 1 cut.

and if they invest a high draft pick on a RB I think it signals we'll be seeing a post June 1 Mixon cut.

So we gotta wait until June 1st. Copy.

Teams can designate two players as post-June 1 cuts.  Meaning they can cut them early but the team still gets the dead cap benefit on June 2nd as if they actually waited until then to make the cut.   The money still stays on the team's books until after June 1st but the player is free to seek opportunities elsewhere.  So if they give Mixon a post-June 1st designation that is what would happen.

Basically what this does is help out the player to start looking for a new team earlier. It doesn't really help the team earlier as the money stays on the books until after June 1st. So until then it would not help keep a team under the cap. But after June 1st the dead cap money is spread out over 2 seasons. I believe in Mixons case it will be 2.7 million over the next two years.

I don't know the specifics, but I believe that they can release him at the earliest time, but designate him as post June 1, and still get the maximum cap benefit.  It also does a service to the player, allowing them to negotiate with other teams sooner, rather than after most of free agency has passed.
